Abstract
According to the world health organization around 2.2 billion people in the world lack access to proper water resources with around 500,000 people dying yearly due to contaminated water ingestion. Colonias are unorganized settlements found on the border between the United States and Mexico and are characterized by poor infrastructure and lack of resources such as water. In the past years, several campaigns have been made to provide water filtration systems to residents in the Paso del Norte colonias, located in the border area of Chihuahua, West Texas, and Southern New Mexico.In the time between the summers of 2018 and 2019, a filter campaign was performed in the colonias of Hueco Tanks, Homestead Meadows in El Paso, as well as in KM29 and Anapra in Ciudad Juarez, all located within the Paso del Norte Region. This study provides the analysis of survey data and water analysis of the samples collected in 2019. Furthermore, the study uses the Risks, Attitudes, Norms, Abilities, and Self-Regulation model for behavioral change developed by J. Mosler to analyze and compare survey data collected by previous campaign authors with current data. Results showed an improvement in scores of the RANAS model after the filter delivery and educational campaign as supported by the increase of the persuasive, infrastructural, and information intervention potentials. Water quality results also ensured the availability of safe drinking water by maintaining post-intervention samples within the established limits from the EPA drinking water standards and the CONAGUA.
