Summary of Interview

This assignment gave me the opportunity to further explore the subject of gender and queerness with my mother. Hilda E. Mendoza was born in El Paso, Texas in 1965, and grew up in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. Although these places are very close together, there are so many cultural differences that Hilda experienced, one of them being how gender was talked about and expressed. Hilda talks about how living in a culturally conservative area made queerness something to be ashamed of, sharing an emotional story about a family member of ours being forced to literally hide under the bed when visiting as if he were something to hide rather than embrace.

Hilda goes on to talk about her life in El Paso and how having a queer child has changed so much about her understanding of queerness, of differing gender identities, and how to become a better ally not only for her daughter but for the people around her.
