Abstract
This Thesis attempts to articulate the difficulties inherent in mother-daughter relationships through short literary fiction where the protagonists are either mothers, daughters, or both. The short stories are set in two fictional southern towns in North Carolina and South Carolina and use interrelated characters and settings to enhance the sense of connectivity, as well as to highlight occurrences of disconnection and isolation.
The ten short stories are arranged chronologically, beginning in the 1930s and culminating with the final story, set in 2013. Recurring characters provide continuity and structure to the collection. Thematic elements emphasize socioeconomic, racial, and gender inequities of the south, as well as the emotional landscape of a series of mother-daughter relationships.
