Summary of Interview
Deana Garcia was born in Miami, Florida, but spent most of her childhood in Lexington, Kentucky. Growing up, she was raised in the practices of the Baptist church, a branch of Christianity that, while different from other branches like Catholicism in terms of practices, still follows the same beliefs taught from the Bible. It was when meeting her husband that she learned more about Catholicism, which would become a big part of her adult religious life. Wanting to follow more of the Catholic church, she went to church when the opportunities came while she was still in the army and attended services even after having her child. Having her child, though, eventually led to her leaving the army to help raise them. She had her child enrolled into Catholic schools to help foster that same faith in God that she had while growing up. It was her faith and practice in prayer that became a source of comfort for her, even with matters as recent as a cancer diagnosis she faced just this year. What her story ultimately shows is despite growing up under a different branch of Christianity, she still was raised with the same positive values, and through those practices of prayer and outreach, she managed to find her own place in the world through her faith.
