The student publication, El Burro, began in 1939 and stopped in 1940. It was revived in 1944 and ran into the 1970s. The magazine provided opportunities to young writers such as Ruben Salazar who honed his craft in part at El Burro before moving on to prosper at the Los Angeles Times. The magazine was purposefully contentious and strove to entertain through equal parts mockery and titillation. Furthermore, the magazine often parodied the more respectable publications on campus such as NOVA and The Prospector. Fictitious interviews mimicked NOVA’s model, and an entire issue titled The Flyspecker parodied The Prospector.
