A numerical investigation on the near-field characteristics of an elliptical coaxial jet

Abstract

The objective of this research was to numerically investigate the near-field flow characteristics of a turbulent elliptical coaxial jet with 0.55 and 1.45 velocity ratios (m = Uo/Ui). In order to design an elliptic coaxial flow nozzle, flows through two-dimensional and three-dimensional coflow nozzles were calculated. The flow characteristics were compared with a baseline condition (circular coflow). CAD (Computer Aided Drawing) models of two-dimensional annuli, a three-dimensional circular and elliptical coaxial nozzle, and two jet domains were developed to capture the flow behavior in all geometries. The geometries in each simulation consisted of structure grid, with fluid properties obtained at ambient conditions. Numerical studies were then conducted on laminar flow through two-dimensional annuli of different outer and inner wall contours and lengths. The understanding of the flow within the two-dimensional annulus led to the development of a three-dimensional circular and elliptical coaxial nozzle. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
