Uncertainty reduction and disclosure among homeless individuals using computer-mediated communication
Abstract
This descriptive study explores how homeless individuals use the Internet to communicate. The study documents where homeless use the Internet including how they use the Internet for computer-mediated communication. The study incorporated the survey responses of 119 homeless people in order to examine the relationship between uncertainty reduction and self-disclosure during initial interaction among homeless individuals using computer-mediated communication. Homeless participants' responses were coded and analyzed using the statistical program SPSS. Pearson r correlations and sample t tests were used to analyze the data. Pearson r tests found significant correlations between uncertainty and self-disclosure among homeless Internet users. In terms of gender and ethnicity, the independent sample t tests conducted, indicated no statistical significance. Results are described in the study.
