Dance Like You Do [and] Fences

Nancy Chauvet Wilson, University of Texas at El Paso

Abstract

My thesis is composed of Dance Like You Do and Fences. “Dance” is a collection of pieces, both fiction and nonfiction and was created from the verse of an unknown source, Work like you don't need the money, love like you've never been hurt, and dance like you do when no one is watching. As I selected the stories, I attempted to place them into the three sections: work, love and dance. With Fences, my intent was to write something like Saint-Exupery's Little Prince, a classic story that is meaningful for both adults and children. It is a novella, an allegory; I hope to submit it for publication in the immediate future. The story is from an essay contest that I once entered and placed first. The essay was about ideas that might create peace and harmony between the people of two nations. The idea came to me when both the East and West Germans tore down the Berlin wall, which had existed for decades, and then they celebrated as one people. As I wrote the essay I tried thinking of all the barriers between humans that promote misunderstandings. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
