A methodology for transitioning from metallic parts to plastic injected components
Abstract
This project reviews the benefits and feasibility of the methodology for transitioning from metallic parts to injected plastic components and the replacement part cost reduction. The methodology was developed using an actual case study of a headlamp adjuster system that was a candidate for metallic to plastic conversions. This methodology was developed due to lack of a documented design methodology for metal to plastic conversion programs recognized by the plastic industry and the need for reducing the long manufacture cycle periods of “Trail an error” that increase cost and time affecting the overall project development. The results obtained from the transition of the metallic parts of the headlamp adjuster system to integrated plastic components clearly showed that the methodology developed not only reduces manufacturing cost but also reduces the time wasted on trial and error methods previously used to convert metals parts into plastic.
