A video game extending direct manipulation
Abstract
The purpose of this work is to see if a video-game application can extend direct manipulation in order to create ‘conversation-like’ relationships, as has been done for a text editor (Novick et al., 2002). Extending direct manipulation to an application allows a user to build relationships via graphical means. The ‘conversation-like’ feature of a relationship is derived from the selection of graphical objects. This selection is designed in a manner that mimics natural language. This paper introduces a tool that allows a user to build and apply relationships in a video-game application. The RBA (relationship building and applying) tool described in this paper allows the user to build relationships between objects and parameters in a video-game application. The user can then apply the created relationship criterion to the domain objects of the application in order to manipulate the objects.
