A safe communication model for optical buses

Maria Isabel Beltran, University of Texas at El Paso

Abstract

The optical parallel bus model is an emerging type of parallel computational model which takes advantage of optical communication technology in its interconnects. The area of optical bus models has been developing for over ten years. Over 80 publications featuring a variety of optical bus models and algorithm development for such models have been identified in the literature. Much of the research conducted in this area focuses on algorithm development in optical bus models. In particular, algorithm development appears focused on Single-Instruction Multiple-Data (SIMD) type algorithms. These algorithms do not take advantage of the apparent capabilities afforded by the optical media. Improvements in the optical bus utilization, for example, enabling MIMD operation, as well as potentially increasing the efficiency of the communication media are possible. This thesis introduces the safe communication model in order to realize these improvements. A three layer approach is defined to develop the safe communication model. The lowest layer abstracts the architecture and base functionality of the optical bus while the middle layer abstracts the fundamental aspects of optical bus communication. Finally, the upper layer provides for safe bus communication. A theorem presents the necessary conditions that ensure safeness on the bus. A simulation used to obtain run data for preliminary analysis of safeness trends is presented. In addition, some outstanding technical issues are clarified. Lastly, an extensive bibliography is given.
