Action plan for the implementation of ISO 14001-1996 and ISO 9001-2000 in a small organization
Abstract
The following document is intended to be used as an Action Plan by small companies wishing to get ISO 9001-2000 and ISO 14001-1996 certification in a simultaneous and streamlined fashion. The reader will find in this document information regarding the history, structure, and requirements of the standards in addition to implementation, certification, and maintenance practices identified by the author during a successful certification process. It has been assumed by the author that the reader has already identified the advantages of implementing a quality and environmental management system as per ISO requirements. Therefore, the author will only address the issues pertinent to helping a small company implement, certify, maintain, and continuously improve both management systems. By using the definition, small organization the author referred to companies with a maximum of 10 administrative positions and an implementation budget no bigger than 35,000 dollars. The action plan most relevant characteristic is its generalized simplicity, a feature difficult to find in the work of other authors dedicated to the implementation and development of management systems. Another reason why the action plan exceeds the information provided by other authors is that the action plan directs the reader to important information necessary not only to satisfy the standards' requirements but actually to obtained value from the conjunct system. This information directs the reader's attention to initiatives widely accepted by today's industry such as Lean Thinking and Six Sigma.
