The single pole digital filter
Abstract
The single pole digital filter is analyzed from a theoretical standpoint and from results obtained by computer simulations.Special attention is paid to the effects of quantization and limiting the size of the product or sum. By evaluating the dB signal-to- noise ratio and dB rejection obtained with computer simulations, optimum filter designs are selected. Experiments are described where the single pole digital filter is implemented in a hardware design and on a minicomputer with a peripheral analog-to-digital converter. The major attributes of the single pole digital filter are its extremely narrow recurring bandwidths and the ease of shifting those bandwidths by shifting the clock frequency of the filter. The ultimate purpose of this study is to develop a tool for use in vibration analysis.
