Abstract

Valera achieved success both as a novelist and as a critic. At the close of the 19th century he was recognized as Spain's most eminent man of letters. He is considered as the most classic prose writer of Spain by Menéndez Pelayo and as the first critic of his kind in Spain. He, however, gained most of his recognition as a novelist.Don Juan Valera was born at Cabra, Córdoba in 1824, of aristocratic parents. His father was don José Valera, an officer in the Spanish Navy, his mother was Dolores Galiano, Marchioness de Paniega.He received his early education at San Telmo College, later studied at Málaga and Sacro Monte.
