Prophet or madman: The enigma of Kahlil Gibran

Nancy Corinne Miller, University of Texas at El Paso

Abstract

The poet Gibran Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931) 1s known in the west simply as Kahlil Gibran. The usual spelling of the name, which means Charles, is Khalil, but he changed it to Kahlil. (This explains the spelling which appears in his story "Khalil theHeretic.") He is generally regarded as the most important literary figure to have come out of the Arabic world in our time. His importance lies not so much in what he had to say, for innumerable poets and tellers of parables have laid similar giftsupon the altar of beauty; rather, he is out- standing because his effect has been felt in both. East and West.
