A study of the development of English vocabulary as a form of reading readiness in the pre-first grade
Abstract
Definition: The bilingual child is one who speaks a foreign language and has heard little else spoken in his home. This is his first language* and English becomes his second language when he must enter an American public school for the first time. In many cases this environmental change makes it necessary for him to spend more than one term in the low first grade, because he does not acquire sufficient knowledge of English in one term to warrant advancement.
