Edna St. Vincent Millay: A Popular Poet

Mary Pearl Jenson, University of Texas at El Paso

Abstract

The term "popular," if applied to a poet at all, is usually applied in a derogatory sense. It implies a slight sneer, or at least a lifted eyebrow. It suggests Edgar A. Guest and other rhymesters like him.But Edna St. Vincent Millay is a popular poet-- a best seller, in fact. And to me this is no indict- ment. Poetry should be popular. It is as natural for people to like poetry as it is for them to enjoy music or dancing, or to appreciate color and harmony.
