Impact of social support, socio-economic status, and ethnicity on stress levels of parents who have children with autism
Abstract
A sample of predominately Hispanic parents was recruited from the Southwest Autism Society of America-El Paso Chapter, Ysleta Independent School District In-Home Training Program, and El Paso Early Childhood Intervention Program to participate in completing the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form ( PSI-Short) and the Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire ( NSSQ). These assessments were used to examine the influence of formal and informal sources of social support in accounting for the stress levels among the parents who have children diagnosed with autism. Variables such as Defensive Responding on Parenting Stress Index-Short Form, Socio-economic Status, and Ethnicity were also examined in the study. Hierarchical Multiple Regression Analysis results indicated that informal and formal support did not account for significant incremental variance in the scores of Total Stress.
