A distributed implementation of the SCIRun problem solving environment for Beowulf-class clusters
Abstract
This thesis describes steps to modify SCIRun, a Problem Solving Environment (PSE) and computational steering software application so that it will execute on a Beowulf class computer cluster rather than on a single workstation. This thesis makes four contributions to SCIRun. First, it describes the steps for compilation on a Beowulf-class cluster with distributed libraries. Second, it lists source code modifications necessary to utilize a Beowulf-class cluster for the application SCIRun. Third, it provides an RPC implementation of the SolveMatrix module (SolveMatrixRPC_client) for use with Beowulf-class clusters. Last, it gives a comparative analysis between the RPC implementation of the matrix solvers and the native solvers under different loads so that the user may utilize the distributed approach when it is optimal or the native approach when resources are available.
