Economic growth in the El Paso-Ciudad Juarez borderplex: Which causes which?
Abstract
This paper analyzes the causal linkages between employment and population growth rates for the El Paso-Ciudad Juarez borderplex in an attempt to answer the following question: which causes which? While previous studies offer extensive investigation into the economic ties between these two border cities, an inquiry into the cause-effect relationships of these border markets is surprisingly absent. The data utilized in this study include total employment and total population figures for El Paso, Texas, along with total population, total employment, and maquiladora sector employment data for Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. The methodology utilized in this research effort employs Granger causality tests in an attempt to indicate whether expansion on one side of the border precedes growth on the other side.
