Retention and generalization of single words following sequential versus simultaneous training of two artificial vocabularies
Abstract
The process of acquisition of two languages is not clearly understood and a common speculation is that acquisition can occur either sequentially or simultaneously. This investigation in conjunction with a pilot study looks at the acquisition of two artificial vocabularies in normal adults and measures the retention of vocabulary taught and the generalization to the spoken word modality. One group was taught artificial vocabulary using a sequential training procedure and the second group was taught using a simultaneous procedure. Retention and generalization of single artificial vocabulary was measured after each artificial vocabulary was taught. It is concluded based on the results that there is no difference between the groups in rate of retention of artificial vocabulary. However, the sequential group maintained a higher accuracy during the spoken word probes when compared to the simultaneous group.
