An advanced planning and scheduling system for make-to-order and make-to-stock environments

Abstract

Several companies are experiencing growing logistical demands by increasing product diversity, and intense global competition. A company that traditionally used a strategy of Make-to-stock (MTS), has now had to start using a Make-to-Order (MTO) strategy. These two strategies are often in conflict. This thesis examines a combination of techniques that act as a solution to the above problem. This solution allows scheduling operations to support both MTS and MTO environments for a paper divider industry. Factors considered in our study are the demand, lot-size, setups and changeovers. A program was developed based on the methods proposed in our research work. This program generates a production plan and schedule that reduces the number of setups, which results in an optimized production schedule. The scheduling system also allows for rush orders to be introduced late in the current production plan, and still generate an optimized schedule. Computational results are shown, and productions schedules are generated to improve the advanced planning scheduling system. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
