Experimental investigation of the turbulent flow in a ribbed 4-pass serpentine passage using 2-component particle image velocimetry
Abstract
W. M. Keck Border Biomedical Manufacturing and Engineering Laboratory (W. M. Keck BBMEL) at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) consists of three main research groups, rapid prototyping research group, tissue engineering group, and cardiovascular hemodynamics group. Cardiovascular hemodynamics group is focused on flow visualization in complex cardiovascular geometries and flow correlation with the onset and progression of cardiovascular diseases. The flow characterization in complex geometries at cardiovascular hemodynamics is not limited to the investigation pertaining to cardiovascular geometries. Specifically, this work deals with the flow characterization of turbulent flow in the first bend of a 4 pass ribbed channel using particle image velocimetry (PIV). Flow experiments with water as working fluid were conducted in a turbine blade flow model modified at the first bend, for optical access to facilitate PIV experiments. Three flow experiments at different Reynolds numbers were conducted and results from these experiments were compared with each other. PIV calibration and image registration were performed to validate time averaged MRV experimental results with the instantaneous measurements acquired using PIV. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
