Modeling the wind profile of Corpus Christi Bay

Abstract

This study was designed to be the prototype for a later study which will be able to successfully model the air-sea interaction in Corpus Christi bay. In order to simulate the surface winds over the bay, the modeling system Mesoscale Model 5 (MM5) was chosen. The model was run for a thirty-six hour period, and then MM5's simulated values of the wind were compared with readings from 5 different observation stations in the region during the final 24 hours of the simulation. From the comparison it was evident that MM5 was able to successfully model the wind given the following two conditions: First, there are no sudden changes in the direction of the wind. Second, the time period chosen for the simulation does not last for an extended period. Further simulations should be performed at different times of the year, and also under varying wind and weather conditions.
