Characterization of Texas bases through permanent deformation testing
Abstract
The quality of the material selected and used as base for road construction can significantly impact the long-term performance of the flexible pavement it is intended to support. This is even more significant in situations where heavy-duty flexible pavements are exposed to large heavily-loaded traffic. Current testing procedures allow for durable pavements, however, a relationship between the material performance in the laboratory and in the field does not exist. Tests that more closely relate to performance in the field need to be developed. Though density is used to determine the quality of a base layer many other factors need to be considered since many forms of pavement distress can be linked to the base material. Among these modes of failure is rutting. The permanent deformation test and a small-scale test were evaluated to determine a correlation between the two to better understand the performance of base materials under repeated loads.
