Description

Children involved in the child welfare system are at increased risk for trauma, prenatal substance exposure (PSE), adverse childhood experiences, and developmental challenges that may affect participation and well-being. A needs assessment conducted at CASA of El Paso identified a need for practical resources to strengthen advocates’ knowledge and confidence related to child development, trauma-informed care, PSE, play-based strategies, and communication with caregivers. The purpose of this doctoral capstone project was to develop and implement an evidence-based occupational therapy toolkit and educational workshop to increase CASA advocates’ knowledge, confidence, and skills in supporting children and families. The project included a comprehensive toolkit with developmental milestone guides, play-based activities, visual supports, co-regulation strategies, trauma-informed communication strategies, PSE education, and school support resources. A workshop was implemented to provide advocates with education and opportunities to apply these strategies. Pre- and post-test findings demonstrated increased knowledge and confidence following the educational intervention, with notable confidence gains in suggesting play-based activities and applying trauma-informed approaches. Workshop feedback also indicated that participants found the education and resources relevant and useful. Findings support the value of incorporating occupational therapy-informed education and practical resources into child welfare advocacy to strengthen advocates’ ability to recognize developmental concerns, support caregivers, and promote children’s participation and well-being.
