Remember When We Tore Each Other Limb from Limb?
Abstract
REMEMBER WHEN WE TORE EACH OTHER LIMB FROM LIMB? is a collection of short stories and surrealist prose poems. Most of these are not connected in terms of character or setting. However, there are two episodic stories that reoccur throughout the book, each of them grounded in real-life situations meant to offset the fantastical settings in which the majority of the other pieces are set. The first of these episodic stories is a series of vignettes about a character named Noah, a young man who is taking care of his elderly mother. The other is a series about a young couple named Ady and Kassie caught in the throes of young love, familial strife, and unforeseen tragedy. On a macro level, REMEMBER WHEN WE TORE EACH OTHER LIMB FROM LIMB? is a subtle commentary meant to softly and creatively explore the shortcomings of our societal structures, the hierarchies responsible for said shortcomings, and the predator/prey relationship that creates; on a more micro level, this collection focuses on the following: the consequences of mindless consumption and the subsequent destruction of ecological structures, the various effects of overtly hedonistic behavior, the failures of capitalism, the ongoing problems with racial inequality, the troubles with toxic masculinity, the (still) ever-growing vitriol being launched at the LGBTQ+ community, as well as a dive into how mental health and medical issues impact individuals and their traditional or non-traditional family structures.
