Biographical Synopsis of Interviewee

Margarita López was born April 15, 1934, in Calvillo, Aguascalientes, México; her parents were laborers, and she had six siblings; she was formally educated through the sixth grade; later, in 1950, she married Higinio López; she was fifteen years old at the time, and he was twenty-four; Higinio began working as a bracero prior to their marriage, and he continued to do so afterward as well; they went on to have eleven children, four of whom died; the family ultimately settled in Beaumont, California.

Summary of Interview

Ms. López talks about her hometown in Calvillo, Aguascalientes, México, and how much it has grown since she was a child; in 1950, when she was fifteen years old, she married Higinio López; he was twenty-four at the time; they grew up in the same town, but on different ranches; Higinio had begun working as a bracero prior to their marriage, before he and Margarita had even met; after they married, they lived on his ranch, and he continued working as a bracero; in 1952, they had their first daughter; by 1956, they had two children and moved to Mexicali, Baja California, México; he traveled back and forth between his home and work on a daily basis; Margarita lived with her sister for a short time, which helped greatly, especially when Higinio had to go to Empalme, Sonora, México to renew his contract and was unable to send money; the family eventually began renting a home in order to live on their own, and three years later, they bought land and started building their own place; in 1960, Higinio legally immigrated to the United States, but he continued working in the fields and commuting daily; during the early 1960s, he arranged for some of his children to immigrate, and in 1972, he was abe to do the same for the rest of the family; Margarita and Higinio went on to have eleven children, four of whom died; the family ultimately settled in Beaumont, California.
